How to play Word Sense

1. Read the sentence and work out what kind of word could fit the missing space.
2. Enter the word you think matches the prompt.
3. If you need help, reveal another clue. Clues can include a synonym, a definition or information about the letters.
4. Work through all three words and compare your Daily result with friends.

A quick example

For an illustrative prompt such as “The path was ___ after the rain”, several words might fit at first. A clue such as “hard to grip” would narrow the meaning towards “slippery”. The extra clues help distinguish the intended word from other plausible answers.

Tips for your first game

• Use the sentence grammar to decide whether you need a noun, verb or adjective.
• Consider the meaning of the whole sentence before focusing on individual letters.
• Treat each clue as an additional constraint and check that your guess fits all the clues you have revealed.

The Daily and more puzzles
