How to play Sudoku

1. Start with the printed digits. They are fixed clues and cannot be changed.
2. Choose an empty cell and check its row, column and 3×3 box. A digit already present in any of those places cannot go in that cell.
3. Use pencil marks to keep track of possible digits. Fill a digit when the clues leave just one possibility.
4. Continue until all 81 cells are filled without repeating a digit in a row, column or box.

A quick example

If a row contains 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9, its remaining cell must be 5. In a less complete row, check the column and box too: they can eliminate digits that the row alone cannot.

Tips for your first game

• Begin with rows, columns or boxes that already have many filled cells.
• Look for a digit that has only one possible position within a box, even when that cell has several pencil marks.
• After placing a digit, revisit the cells sharing its row, column and box. One placement can unlock several more.
