Synonym games for adults: 10 word-choice challenges

7 min read

Synonym games become more interesting when the question is “Which word fits this meaning here?” Two words can overlap without being interchangeable. Tone, intensity, grammar and the surrounding sentence all affect the choice.

Try these ten original challenges. Choose before opening the answer, then explain why another option does not quite fit. Each question states the intended meaning. Where a different context could support an alternative, the explanation says so. There is no need to total a score.

1. Mild irritation or strong anger?

“Jo was annoyed that the printer jammed once.” Which replacement keeps the irritation relatively mild: irritated, furious or delighted?

Reveal answer and explanation

Irritated. Furious makes the anger much stronger; delighted reverses the feeling. People use emotional words with different degrees of emphasis, but irritated is the closest of these choices for the mild reaction specified.

2. Praise careful spending

You want to compliment someone who avoids waste without criticising them for refusing to share. Choose thrifty, stingy or miserly in “Sam is a ___ shopper.”

Reveal answer and explanation

Thrifty. It usually presents economical spending positively. Stingy and miserly suggest excessive reluctance to spend or give. All three concern money, but the question asks for an approving tone.

3. An ordinary request

In a friendly everyday message, replace assist in “Could you assist me with this box?” Choose help, supervise or accompany.

Reveal answer and explanation

Help. It preserves the request for assistance in a more ordinary register. Supervise means oversee; accompany means go with. A supervisor or companion might help, but those words do not themselves request help with the box.

4. A firm decision

“Her decision is firm: she will not change it.” Which replacement fits this use of firm: resolute, hard or solid?

Reveal answer and explanation

Resolute is the intended choice because the sentence concerns determination. Hard and solid can replace firm when describing physical materials, and “a solid decision” can mean a sound one. Neither expresses unwillingness to change as directly here.

5. Praise clear brevity

A note communicates everything needed in a few words, and you want to praise it without suggesting rudeness. Choose concise, terse or incomplete.

Reveal answer and explanation

Concise. Terse can also mean brief, but may suggest abruptness. Incomplete says something needed is missing, contrary to the setup. In a neutral technical description, terse might be acceptable; the requested praise makes concise the safer choice.

6. A fast glance

Replace quick in “She took a quick glance at the departure board.” Choose brief, rapid or early.

Reveal answer and explanation

Brief is a natural fit for a glance of short duration. Rapid is defensible if you mean a swift action, although “a brief glance” is more ordinary wording. Early changes the timing relative to something else. This round deliberately allows a reasoned alternative.

7. The right kind of light

“This suitcase is light, so it is easy to carry.” Choose lightweight, bright or pale as the closest replacement for light.

Reveal answer and explanation

Lightweight. The sentence concerns weight. Bright refers to illumination or vividness, and pale to a light colour. A pale suitcase can be heavy. The reason after “so” identifies which meaning is intended.

8. Curiosity or intrusion?

A colleague asks thoughtful questions about how a machine works. You want an approving description of their curiosity. Choose inquisitive, nosy or intrusive.

Reveal answer and explanation

Inquisitive fits the stated interest in understanding the machine. Nosy and intrusive suggest crossing a boundary. Inquisitive can sometimes sound critical too, especially about personal questions; the machine context and approving intention matter.

9. Confidence is not certainty

“We are optimistic about finishing today, though delays are possible.” Which replacement preserves the uncertainty: hopeful, certain or guaranteed?

Reveal answer and explanation

Hopeful. It expresses a positive expectation without making completion definite. Certain removes that uncertainty. Guaranteed is also a stronger promise and does not fit “we are guaranteed about finishing” grammatically.

10. A place with very little sound

“The reading room was quiet, apart from an occasional page turning.” Choose hushed, silent or deserted.

Reveal answer and explanation

Hushed best preserves the low level of sound. Silent, read literally, conflicts with the page turning, although writers sometimes use it loosely. Deserted means empty of people, which the sentence does not establish. If you chose silent as deliberate exaggeration, explain that change rather than calling it an exact substitution.

Turn the answers into another round

Choose one rejected option and write a sentence where it would be the better word. For example, “The suitcase was pale blue” gives pale a proper job, while “They were furious about the repeated cancellations” suits stronger anger. This makes the discussion about meaning, not about labelling a word wrong in every situation.

With a partner, take turns defending two plausible choices. Agree on the intended tone first, then decide which sentence conveys it more precisely. You can end after one pair of sentences.

Synonym clues in Word Sense

Word Sense includes a synonym among its available clue types. You combine that information with a sentence prompt and other clues to find a hidden word. One synonym alone may suggest several answers; the remaining clues narrow the choice. Puzzle Lantern’s Daily contains three words. The open-ended discussions above are original article activities, not a claim that the app accepts every reasonable synonym as a solution.
