If you like 7 Little Words for its clues and letter pieces, try 4 Little Words from the same publisher. If you mainly enjoy interpreting clues, Tiny Little Crosswords, LinkedIn Crossclimb and Word Sense offer different ways to turn meaning into an answer.
The important distinction is how you enter the answer: assembling supplied chunks, filling crossings, arranging a ladder or typing a word from context. Puzzle Lantern is our own app. This comparison uses official descriptions and limited web inspection checked on 16 October 2026; the examples below are ours, not copied daily answers.
What are you trying to keep?
In 7 Little Words, each written clue has an answer length, and you join letter-group tiles to make the word. For example, “Tool for driving nails”, six letters, could use HAM + MER. The definition suggests an answer; the available fragments help confirm its spelling.
| Alternative | What stays familiar | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Little Words | Written clues and answer fragments. | Four answers instead of seven. |
| Tiny Little Crosswords | A written clue guides words. | Small crossing grid with one clue for the puzzle. |
| Crossclimb | Clues lead to individual answers. | Order words so neighbours differ by one letter. |
| Word Sense | Meaning, length and other hints narrow the answer. | Type a word missing from a sentence; no tile assembly. |
4 Little Words: the closest mechanical match
4 Little Words keeps the same combine-the-tiles instruction and displays four clues. For an original illustration, “A person who repairs pipes”, seven letters, could be assembled from PL + UM + BER. You still need the clue and the supplied chunks to agree.
Choose it when you want a smaller set rather than a new way of solving. The official browser page currently asks you to create a free account to play. We inspected its instructions and access screen but did not create an account. It should not be presented as unrestricted anonymous play merely because the home page has a Play link.
Tiny Little Crosswords: one clue, several crossing answers
The official Tiny Little Crosswords page presents one clue above a small board, with letter-reveal controls. Instead of matching seven separate definitions to chunks, you interpret one prompt and use the grid’s lengths and crossings to constrain the words.
Imagine the prompt “Two sleeping places”. BED and BERTH could fit three-letter and five-letter entries crossing at their first B. The shared letter and entry lengths constrain both answers. This is only an illustration of the shared-clue idea, not a complete crossword. If you like letter confirmation from other answers, this format gives it to you through crossings.
Its browser page currently requests a free account. The 7 Little Words and More iPhone/iPad listing also includes Tiny Little Crosswords and describes paid subscriptions and puzzle packs. Check the particular edition’s access rather than assuming the web and app catalogs are identical.
Crossclimb: clue answers become a ladder
LinkedIn describes Crossclimb as solving words, putting them into a one-letter-change ladder and unlocking clues for its ends. An original miniature ladder is COLD → CORD → CARD → WARD. Each neighbour changes exactly one letter without rearranging the others.
Definitions might lead you to “low in temperature”, “a thick string”, “a greeting sent in an envelope” and “a hospital division”. Unlike tile assembly, solving each clue is only part of the job: the words must also fit the chain. It is a daily game and its format involves speed. LinkedIn says non-members can play, so an account is not universally required just to try the games.
Word Sense: infer the missing word
Word Sense begins with a sentence such as “The room became ___ when everyone stopped talking”. More clues can provide an opposite, synonym, length, another sentence, first letter or definition, depending on the word’s five-clue ladder. You type the whole answer. There are no supplied chunks to combine.
It gives three Daily words, ordered easy, medium and hard. A wrong guess spends a clue, so trying a plausible synonym has a cost. The app displays elapsed time, but time is not part of its ranking. See the complete original sample round for how the narrowing works.
Puzzle Lantern is on iPhone/iPad, with Android in a closed test. It is free to download; current initial access lasts seven days before subscription access is needed. Word Sense has no More puzzles mode. If you want clues to try here first, open ten original word puzzles with answer reveals.
