Daily puzzle games with friends, without matching schedules

6 min read

To play daily puzzle games with friends asynchronously, agree on the same puzzle and date, let everyone play when it suits them, then compare results. You do not need to be online together. The main choice is where the results live: a built-in friends leaderboard, a group chat or a separate tracker.

Use a built-in board if you want results collected automatically. Use chat if your group wants a light routine without another service. Use a tracker if you already share scores but want totals over several days. These solve different coordination problems.

Puzzle Lantern is our own app. Other product details below come from official pages checked on 16 October 2026; this is a setup guide, not a claim that we tested every social feature.

Three ways to organise the same daily puzzle

Option 1: let the app collect the results

In Puzzle Lantern, each player uses their own device. Add a friend by sending an invite link or a request to their exact username; the other person accepts. There is no contact syncing. The friend setup guide explains both routes.

Choose one of the four Dailies: Sudoku, Recall, Vanish or Word Sense. Players on the same puzzle date receive the same challenge. Each game has friends and global leaderboards; there is no need to invent a combined score across unlike games.

  1. Pick one game for the group to start with.
  2. Confirm that everyone can see the accepted friendship.
  3. Agree on a puzzle date, especially across time zones.
  4. Play the Daily on your own device and return to its friends board for results.

Use the Daily for comparison. More puzzles rounds are extra play in Sudoku, Recall and Vanish, and should not be mixed into the Daily table. Word Sense is Daily only. Puzzle Lantern also has an activity streak, so it is not a streak-free product.

It is available on iPhone/iPad, with Android in a closed test. A free download does not mean permanent free access: the current new-install allowance is seven days, followed by subscription access. Have everyone check their offer before choosing it as a continuing group routine.

Option 2: keep the conversation in your group chat

A shared daily game such as Waffle works with a simple message containing the puzzle number and result. Its Daily uses swaps and stars; use the same mode rather than comparing one person’s Daily with another person’s timed Challenge.

For games without a suitable share button, write a short result yourself. For example: “Puzzle date: 16 October. Game: our chosen Daily. Finished; no hints.” This is a message template, not an actual result or evidence of a timed test.

Agree on whether hints are welcome and whether an unfinished puzzle is simply recorded as unfinished. Avoid turning a missed day into a penalty unless everyone actively wants that rule. A conversation can be worthwhile without a weekly winner.

LinkedIn is another shared-daily option. Its official help says members and non-members can play, and lists a midnight Pacific reset. Social account features are a separate matter. Our mechanics comparison can help your group choose something similar elsewhere.

Option 3: add a separate scoreboard

Pumpkin describes private groups of two to four friends that paste Wordle and Connections share text into a weekly tracker. The puzzle is played at its original service; Pumpkin reads the pasted result and totals it. It says setup and play are free.

Create the group, choose the supported games and invite the others. Set the payout settings to $0 if you want a score-only routine; its published setup includes optional stakes. Do not assume the tracker independently verifies how someone played. Your group still needs an agreement about hints and outside help.

Keep the answers out of the first message

Send a result summary rather than a screenshot of the completed grid or answer card. Ask “Has everyone finished?” before discussing a word, a missing card or a decisive Sudoku placement. If you discuss the answer in chat, use your chat app’s spoiler feature or a separate thread.

Across time zones, compare puzzle identifiers or dates rather than saying only “today”. For one phone passed around a room, this guide’s setup is the wrong format: our family-games article covers pass-and-play, shared screens and remote options together.

Make room for a daily puzzle

Play Sudoku, Word Sense, Recall and Vanish on iPhone and iPad, then compare results with friends.
